Speaking today at the opening panel of the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece, President Alar Karis emphasized that the key to strengthening Europe’s competitiveness does not lie in copying other economic models, but in placing its own values, above all people and their freedoms, at the centre of development. “Our strength lies in people, in their education, entrepreneurship and cooperation. A society that puts people at its centre is a successful society,” he said.
“Europe’s strength lies in the fact that we place people and values at the heart of economic development,” said President Karis. According to him, individual freedoms, self-fulfilment and the opportunity to shape one’s own future are the foundations of Europe’s success, and these values are also deeply connected to Greece’s historical and cultural heritage.
He also stressed the importance of balancing economic freedom with social security. “The courage to innovate and take risks is born from trust, from knowing that support exists even in the event of failure,” said the Estonian Head of State.
President Karis emphasized that Europe’s competitiveness depends above all on investing in people, in education, science and culture. “Investing in people creates value and increases productivity,” he noted.
President Karis praised Greece for its reforms in recent years, describing the country as an important success story for both the European Union’s economy and unity. “You have demonstrated that change is possible and that reforms deliver results,” he said.
The Estonian President also addressed digital development and artificial intelligence, drawing on Estonia’s experience. According to him, Estonia’s digital state has helped reduce bureaucracy and improve access to services. At the same time, he stressed that the introduction of new technologies must support people rather than replace them.
President Karis also highlighted the need to strengthen Europe’s single market and capital markets and to increase investment, particularly in the fields of energy and defence. “Competitiveness is security. To address geopolitical challenges, Europe needs more unity and greater investment,” he emphasized.
The Delphi Economic Forum brings together policymakers, business leaders and opinion leaders from across Europe to discuss the future of the economy, security and society.
