The remarks of President Alar Karis in the wake of the NATO Summit in the Hague

The message that has come out of the Hague is clear: NATO is united in its willingness to do whatever is needed to defend peace and freedom. The decision of the alliance’s members to raise their defence spending to 5% of GDP and to keep this promise is essential to ensuring the robustness of NATO’s defence capabilities and the credibility of its deterrence. Europe must take greater responsibility for its own defence, but the ongoing commitment of the United States to NATO is equally necessary.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its wish to undermine European security is a threat which impacts the entire Euro-Atlantic area in one and the same way. Its ambitions stretch beyond Ukraine: Russia aims to weaken NATO across the board, including by way of sabotage, hybrid attacks and the operations of its shadow fleet on the Baltic Sea. Those threats demand a united response.

Support for Ukraine is inextricably linked to our shared safety, and in turn to the overall security of Europe. Ukraine’s future membership of NATO will serve as a solid security guarantee not only for Ukraine itself, but for the entire continent.

Just as important is that the alliance bolsters defence industry cooperation and creates conditions wherein new technologies and military capabilities help to maintain NATO members’ advantage and superiority on the battlefield.
