The traditional address given by the head of state and the concert held to mark Independence Day will be relayed live from the Estonia Theatre by the national broadcaster ERR on the evening of 24 February. Estonian Television (ETV) will also be airing a special programme shining the spotlight on those who have contributed to making life in Estonia better.

“This year both the presidential address and the concert performance will be without an audience, and there will be no Independence Day reception, since we want and indeed are obliged to protect people’s health,” explained Indrek Treufeldt, communications adviser to President Karis. “The world has been warned of the tidal wave of coronavirus that is rushing towards it, and we are already seeing signs of the increased spread of the infection. Hopefully this will be the last time that we, like those in many other countries, have to celebrate our national day stuck between our four walls at home because of the virus.”

Ahead of Independence Day, state decorations will be awarded to those whose work and dedication have helped made life in Estonia better, as well as to friends of the country who have contributed to the promotion of partnerships and cooperation.

At the heart of the Independence Day concert performance, which will be beamed live into people’s homes, is the concept of Estonians as an inquisitive nation. It will present a rich and varied showcase of the work of Estonian composers.

“A concert devised especially by some of Estonia’s biggest creative names to be shown on the evening of Independence Day has become a tradition, and it is one that will continue this year,” said Rasmus Puur, cultural adviser to President Karis. “This year’s performance is anchored in the questions that people ask, whether that be everyday ponderings or questions they have been asking since time immemorial. Asking questions is an inseparable part of our lives that leads, for example, to advances in science and also gives us a better understanding not only of the world around us, but also ourselves. And recent times have shown that people have more questions than ever. The performance will certainly feature elements that are familiar to people, but it will also offer them new ideas and food for thought, all accompanied by some amazing Estonian music.”

The creative team behind the performance comprises director Jüri Nael, musical director Mihhail Gerts and designer Emer Värk. The director for television is Ove Musting.

“Once again this year we are working very closely with the creative team on ETV’s broadcast of the concert so that the celebrations of our national day are suitably festive and as enjoyable as possible for viewers,” said Hannela Lippus, the executive producer of ERR’s Independence Day broadcasts.
