President of the Republic at Tartu Song Celebration Õnn ja rõõm (Happiness and Joy)

25.06.2024 | 17:25

Dear guests,

What we are experiencing here today on Tartu Song Festival Grounds is the definition of happiness and joy. It is a rush of emotions, but at the same time a total clarity and a sense of presence that fills us. Even if our stomachs are a bit empty, our feet slightly wet or the sun has worn us out, we are filled with crystal clear joy of music and this moment.

Estonian writer Tõnu Õnnepalu has said that happiness cannot be captured. The moment you catch it, you kill it. Happiness is only for an instant and needs to be let go. However, as it is so changeful and fluid, we may encounter it again at any moment.

It is still possible to be happy and joyful more permanently. It is a question of looking at the world. It is a question of finding love. It is a question of looking kindly on the person next to you. It is a question of a sense of humour and a smile.

As the happy composer Eino Tamberg has aptly pointed out – experiencing happiness and joy is a socially valuable act. A happy person does little harm.

Dear people of Estonia and friends from Latvia!

The search of harmony with another person in music and song is a bond that binds us to friends and strangers alike. Harmony builds a bridge over the river of disagreement and the field of resentment. Let us cross these bridges more often in our daily lives, waving goodbye to disagreements and noticing the moments of happiness and joy that are coming our way.

I would like to thank everyone who made today's celebration possible. All of the artistic directors and organisers, the choir and orchestra conductors, parents and support networks, the warm audience and the weather.

I wish you all happiness and joy! Happy summer solstice!
