In the words of the President of the Republic, Kristina Šmigun and Andres Veerpalu thanks to their wonderful gold medals managed to achieve more in a week than hundreds of politicians could do in many years. “The joy of victory that was presented to us enhanced our feeling of unity as a nation and pride in our country. When the Estonian National Anthem rang out for three times over the Olympic Ski Stadium, Estonia, recognised as a great ski country by the skiing world for a long time already, became famous also in the eyes of worldwide TV audience,” President Rüütel said.
“Estonia is grateful and honours her Olympic winners and their coaches Anatoli Šmigun and Mati Alaver. We are grateful also to the maintenance teams and training companions, who through their years long persistent work, have participated in forging of those victories. We are also grateful to the Olympic Committee and our ski leaders for supporting our talented sportsmen and setting a good example for our youth with their wonderful achievements,” the Head of Estonian State said.
During the reception, the memory of President Lennart Meri was honoured with a moment of silence.
