This year’s topic is a motto from history, with exclamation marks replaced by periods. Delving into these three keywords enables students to look for their roots and influences and thereby gain an even more thorough understanding of their meaning and value.
The 24th history research paper competition with prizes from the President of the Republic of Estonia is aimed at students with the purpose of engaging their interest in history and broadening their knowledge, but also to acknowledge, record and maintain national values and develop students’ independent research skills.
The competition is organised by the Estonian History and Civics Teachers Association and sponsored by the President of the Republic’s Cultural Fund and the Ministry of Education and Research. Previous competitions have yielded a total of 2251 research papers, which are preserved in the Estonian Literary Museum.
Competition participants are divided into two age groups: basic school (grades 5–9) and upper secondary school (grades 10–12) & vocational schools. The upper age limit for participants is 21 years. The jury will give out three main cash prizes and book prizes in both age groups.
The research papers will be evaluated by a jury that consists of representatives of several research institutions. The jury will assess each research paper’s originality and inventiveness in the selection and treatment of the topic, the variety and reliability of sources, the originality of the source material, the ability to link materials and make generalisations and comparisons, explanations of the illustrative materials, the precision of the list of references and the structure and formatting of the paper. In addition to the jury, special prizes are given out by various Estonian educational and memory institutions.
The deadline for submitting the research papers is 3 April 2023. The terms and conditions of the competition can be viewed on the website of the Estonian History and Civics Teachers Association at www.eays.edu.ee and the document attached to the press release.
