“Estonia wants Georgia to enjoy every success on its path of reform towards EU membership, and we will be happy to support you by sharing our experience,” the head of state told President Zourabichvili. “The coming weeks are very important for Georgia on its journey to obtaining candidate country status and in fulfilling the criteria set by the European Commission. To this end, you must demonstrate your determination at every level, and not just in words, but in actions.”
President Karis said Estonia’s experience showed that one of the keys to success in this regard is unity, a coordinated approach and mutual respect on the part of the political leaders of any country aiming for EU membership. “In the case of Estonia, that meant our head of state, our government and the leaders of our parliament working as a team to achieve the same goal,” he remarked.
The visit of the Georgian head of state will serve to reassure the majority of her fellow countrymen who are hoping to obtain candidate country status for Georgia before the end of the year.
During their meeting, President Karis and President Zourabichvili also spoke about regional security, the Russian-instigated war of aggression against Ukraine and developments within Georgia itself.
Also on the agenda were relations between Estonia and Georgia.
