President Karis expressed his respect for Ukraine’s leaders who, despite the constant provocations, have remained calm and stated their willingness to resolve the conflict peacefully.
“I align myself with all those who wish we had a way of securing peace through the power of diplomacy and dialogue,” he remarked. “This is a decisive moment in European history. President Putin will answer to future generations for his violent actions. But we European and Western leaders are also responsible, for stepping up in defence of our values, and for our commitment to a Europe united and at peace. We regret every single life lost. It is our duty to protect our shared values and the democracy we have all helped to build up. A threat to Ukraine is a threat to the security of Europe.”
President Karis confirmed that Estonia stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. “The EU is set to deliver a massive package of sanctions, and will do so swiftly and decisively,” he warned.
The Estonian head of state added that what is most important is keeping the door to the EU and NATO open to Ukraine. “We must have concrete next steps in place for further cooperation and integration,” he said. “We know you will continue to value democracy and remain on the path of reforms. Eventually, it will lead you to membership of the European Union, and we will welcome you. You belong in Europe.”
President Karis underscored Estonia’s support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We remain fully committed to the policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory,” he explained. “Ukraine has a right to defend its borders and its independence, and we will continue to help Ukraine build up its military capabilities so that it can stand against any and all aggression.”
