On Tuesday, President of the Republic Alar Karis visited the Defence Forces Exercise Pikne (Lightning), watched a helicopter shooting exercise near Rutja in Lääne-Viru County and met with French helicopter pilots in Tapa. The Head of State got to know their technical equipment and thanked them for their service.

The President stressed the importance of the Allies in Estonia’s defence, especially in the current security situation. “Our Allies are tightly integrated into Estonia’s defence activities,” said President Karis. “The participation of French units in the Defence Forces Exercise Pikne is a convincing example of the deep trust between our defence forces, the interaction and the joint defence capabilities.”

The objective of Exercise Pikne is to practice the rapid deployment of NATO troops to a conflict area and to work together to counter threats on land, in the air and at sea. Exercise Pikne, which has almost 3,000 participants, takes place from 18 September to 2 October. Allied units from Latvia, the United Kingdom, France and the United States are attending the major exercise led by the Estonian division.
