President Karis thanked Greece for its unwavering support of EU unity and sanctions against Russia and explained that additional measures like a price cap on oil were needed in order to raise the cost of the war for Russia. “Crises have brought us together,” he said. “Flying in the face of doubt, all of the difficulties that have arisen as a result of Russia’s aggression have united Europe. We view both the problems and their solutions in much the same way. Unity and like-mindedness among allies in supporting Ukraine are holding in both the North and the South. We are acting together to guarantee that this terrible aggression ends with a Ukrainian victory.”
During the meeting, the Estonian head of state and Greek head of government spoke about Ukrainian refugees as well as issues related to Mediterranean migration. President Karis explained that Estonia is giving Ukrainian refugees all the support it can and that the country is also contributing within its means to the Frontex missions on the Mediterranean Sea. He gave the example of a speedboat manned by an Estonian crew which began patrolling the waters around the Greek island of Kastellorizo this week under the aegis of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
Estonia and Greece enjoy active bilateral relations, and there are a number of areas in which this cooperation can be further enhanced. “Our two countries have already signed a memorandum of mutual understanding in regard to digital cooperation, and now is the perfect time to begin applying that in practice,” said President Karis.
