President Alar Karis met with Catherine Russell, the Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund, and spoke at the roundtable organised by the Fund about Estonia’s experience in the use of AI, its impact on education and methods for inclusive education.

“The question is not whether to use AI, but how to use it wisely,” President Karis stressed. “We need to make AI a partner to the learner, not as a substitute for thinking.”

The Estonian Head of State spoke about the AI Leap educational programme as an example – its goal is to ensure that every young person has access to the best AI tools and the ability to use them in a meaningful way. The education programme involves 20,000 students and approximately 5,000 teachers, who will learn to use AI as a personal tutor, not as something that provides the answers.

President Karis assured that AI will not replace teachers, but increase their importance: “A good teacher doesn’t just pass on knowledge, but also evokes curiosity and teaches critical thinking.”

The Head of State also warned of the dangers of AI, such as the spread of misinformation and the threat to privacy, which is why artificial intelligence must be used responsibly. “Success is not how smart the machines become, but how smart and human we remain,” said President Karis.
