“Estonia’s two-year UN Security Council membership is about to end. During this period Estonia and our diplomats has had many priceless opportunities to boost our country’s prominence, gaining direct experience of operating in the epicentre of global diplomacy. We have achieved the goals set when we were applying for that position. For instance, Estonia became the first country to raise the topic of cybersecurity at the UN Security Council. Therefore the presence of our Head of State at that high-level meeting is an important way of demonstrating that we take our duties very seriously until the very end of our membership,” emphasised Celia Kuningas-Saagpakk, Foreign Policy Adviser to the President.
While in New York, the Head of State will meet with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum. President Karis will also speak at the UN Central Emergency Response Fund conference about resolution of humanitarian crises and meet with the local Estonian community.
President Karis will return to Estonia in the evening on Friday.
