President Alar Karis today approved the Act Amending the Electricity Market Act and Competition Act, which will enable the production price of electricity to be capped and electricity to be sold to household consumers as a universal service.

The act obliges the state-run Eesti Energia to sell electricity to Estonian household consumers and all resellers as a universal service. Moreover, it gives the 63 electricity sellers in the country the opportunity to sell electricity as part of the universal service once the act comes into force.

The act does not set a price for the service, but sets out the principles of its shaping.
