The head of state highlighted the role of the newly appointed Honorary Consul not only as an helper to Estonian citizens and businesses, but also as a bridge between Estonia and the United States. “Honorary consuls play a key role in fostering friendships, promoting cultural exchange and boosting economic cooperation,” he said. “There are a lot of Estonians here in New York, and they are sure to expect the Honorary Consul to get actively involved in the life of the local Estonian community.”
President Karis said he was convinced that Airi Hämmalov was the right choice for the post, acknowledging her commitment and willingness to contribute to the promotion of Estonian interests in New York.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna describes each new honorary consul as an important and valuable addition to Estonia’s diplomatic network. “Our country being as small as it, that network is rather modest in size,” he said. “So opening an honorary consulate here in New York gives us an opportunity to further promote cultural and economic ties between Estonia and the USA, and to ensure that consular assistance is available to Estonian citizens who find themselves in need of help here in the big city.”
President Karis also met with members of the business elite to showcase opportunities for business partnerships in Estonia. Attending the event were representatives of New York-based General Atlantic, Guggenheim, the Mizuho Financial Group, the Blackstone Group, ChainIQ, Craft, Estee Lauder Companies Inc. and the Partners Group.
