President Alar Karis and his wife Sirje will be departing today for Italy, where the head of state is due to open the Estonian pavilion at the 59th Venice Art Biennale tomorrow. This time, the Estonian exhibition is being held at the very heart of the event, on its most visited main street in Giardini. Joining the head of state at the opening will be Minister of Culture Tiit Terik.

President Karis will also be visiting other countries’ pavilions as well as the main exhibition of the biennale in the Arsenale exhibition space and the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art to discuss opportunities to display the works of Estonian artists in the future.

The Estonian pavilion is displaying a joint piece by artists Kristina Norman and Bita Razavi and curator Corina L. Apostol, entitled ‘Orchidelirium: An Appetite for Abundance’, based on the life and work of Emilie Rosalie Saal, an artist with Estonian roots.

Estonia was invited by the Mondriaan Fund in the Netherlands to use the space in the Rietveld pavilion at the very centre of Giardini Park. Due to the number of pavilions in the park, as well as the presence of the main exhibition here and the history of the site, it is the most visited venue for the biennale, which will result in Estonia receiving much more attention than usual.

The Estonian pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale is the biggest and most significant international art project for the state. Matters pertaining to the pavilion are being organised by the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Arts, while the country’s participation in the biennale is supported by the Ministry of Culture.

The Venice Art Biennale has been taking place since 1895. It is the longest-running and most important international event focussing on contemporary art. Estonia has had its own pavilion at the event since 1997. This year’s biennale is showcasing 1422 pieces by 213 artists from 58 countries.

The head of state and his wife will be returning to Estonia late tomorrow evening.
