“Estonia’s position is clear – NATO shall discuss issues of European, including Estonian, security together with its allies, and this was confirmed by everyone at the meeting just held,” said President Alar Karis today after the phone call between US President Joe Biden and the heads of the Eastern European members of NATO.

The President of the Republic added that third countries have no right to decide on NATO’s security solutions or any right of veto or say in who may or may not belong to NATO. “This decision is made by NATO members alone,” said President Karis. “NATO’s military deterrence is an issue decided solely by its member states according to the security situation.”

The head of state emphasised that the present crisis can be solved via existing communication channels and the NATO-Russia Council should be used for communication with Russia. All allies must make a joint effort to change Russia’s behaviour, added President Karis.

According to the head of state, what is happening near the borders of Ukraine needs our continued attention and Ukraine needs our support. "It’s very important that NATO allies do not get distracted and we’re pleased that US President Biden is keeping the world’s focus on Ukraine, which will hopefully help to defuse the tension,” added the President. “Ukraine must be able to decide its own future and make its own choices.”

Today, President Karis participated in a telephone call with NATO members in Eastern Europe, where he gave his views on the security situation near the Ukrainian borders. The Bucharest Nine (B9) includes Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
