Meeting today with Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa, President Alar Karis discussed strategically important projects linking Estonia and Latvia, cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments and help for Ukraine.

“Further matters have arisen in regard to the connections between us,” remarked the Estonian head of state. “Not only are we faced with issues related to traditional transport, but we must also develop new, shared energy infrastructure.”

President Karis said that Estonia and Latvia must work together to ensure that their planned offshore wind farms are linked as effectively as possible. “All the more so given that the uncoupling of our electricity networks from Russia is being achieved more quickly than initially planned,” he added. “The complex economic conditions and inflation in the Baltic Sea region are forcing us to think about how to finance major projects and secure European funding.”

The head of state noted that Estonia and Latvia take the same view of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and of support for the beleaguered nation. “But we must both do more to ensure that countries at a greater distance from the war zone understand our position,” he urged.
