From Thursday 13 April President Alar Karis will be on a two-day working visit to the Netherlands, with whose leaders he will meet to discuss closer defence and energy cooperation and support for Ukraine.

In the Hague, the Estonian head of state will be meeting with King Willem-Alexander, President of the Senate Jan Anthonie Bruijn, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Roelien Kamminga and Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

During their meetings they will be discussing closer relations between Estonia and the Netherlands as well as broader cooperation within the European Union and NATO. They will also be talking about Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, support for the Ukrainians and preparations for the NATO summit being held in Vilnius in July. Furthermore, they will be looking for ways of working more closely together in the field of energy, as Estonia is interested in the Dutch experience of developing the green sector and offshore wind energy.

On Friday 14 April President Karis will be visiting Erasmus University Rotterdam, at which he himself previously worked as a researcher. There he will give a speech to students about the challenges of achieving peace in Europe.

Thereafter the head of state will unveil a section dedicated to Estonian literature at the Amsterdam Public Library (Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam or OBA). The collection of books was assembled in cooperation with the Estonian embassy and Estonia House in the Netherlands and the National Library of Estonia. President Karis will also be meeting with honorary consuls and Estonian entrepreneurs and their partners active in the Netherlands.

The head of state will be accompanied on his visit by his wife, Sirje Karis.

President Karis will be returning to Estonia on Saturday.
