“Hunger cannot be a weapon of war. Yet millions of people around the world are feeling the impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The impact of its missile strikes, the blockade of the Ukrainian ports, mined fields, and disruption of food production significantly deepens global food insecurity and hunger,” President Alar Karis stressed in the video address delivered at the opening event of Grain from Ukraine, a humanitarian initiative launched by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Today marks 90 years since Holodomor, the famine caused by the Soviet Union in Ukraine, which resulted in the death of millions.

“Ukraine has a memory of a deadly man-made Great Famine, Holodomor, that took the lives of millions of its people. Created by Stalin’s policies, the totalitarian system sought to erase the memory of the famine along with its victims. Yet Ukraine remembers and the word remembers. In the midst of defending its freedom, sovereignty and independence against a brutal attack it continues to reach out to those affected by hunger around the world,” said President Karis.

The head of state welcomed the humanitarian initiative launched today by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to mitigate the food crisis in Africa and Asia and confirmed the dedication of Estonia and other partners to helping those facing hunger. “However, we all agree that the most effective way to reduce food insecurity and hunger is to make sure that the Russian aggression against Ukraine ends,” noted President Karis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to support the Ukrainian grain initiative launched today with 50,000 euros. The purpose of the humanitarian initiative is to mitigate the global food crisis via grain export to countries in need. “The UN Black Sea Grain Initiative has a crucial role in making sure that food products reach vulnerable people and countries around the world alongside the EU established Solidarity Lanes,” said the head of state.

By launching the Grain from Ukraine initiative, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy aims to send grain ships from Ukraine to the Asian and African countries most in need of additional support in order to alleviate food shortages that affect a large number of people.
