The Estonia-Botswana business seminar held today in Tallinn within the scope of the state visit of the President of Botswana brought together digital and business experts to discuss opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and new forms of cooperation in the field of digital development. In his speech, Estonian President Alar Karis highlighted the opportunities of digital and educational cooperation.

“Estonia is committed to sharing its digital knowledge with other countries and we see great potential in supporting Botswana’s public sector modernisation and economic diversification,” said the Head of State at the business seminar. “We’re looking forward to opportunities for digital innovation, business development and educational cooperation.” According to him, Estonia will share its experience in building an e-payment system, which is a topical issue for Botswana.

President Karis noted that Estonian companies already have practical experience in Botswana. As examples, he mentioned Nortal, which has developed digital solutions in cooperation with the Botswana Unified Revenue Service, and Baltic Computer Systems (BCS), which is taking part in the digitalisation programme initiated by the European Union by contributing to the development of digital skills.

“Estonia and Botswana are small in population but resilient and internationally renowned for their economic freedom and competitiveness,” said President Karis. “Both countries value open markets, the protection of private property and efficient and transparent administration.”

The Head of State also mentioned the AI Leap when talking about Estonia’s opportunities. “Estonia’s digital success story is well known in the world and now our next step is to start using artificial intelligence in education,” said the Estonian Head of State. “The nationwide initiative will bring artificial intelligence into schools and train teachers to prepare both students and teachers for the future, where digital skills will be of key importance.”
