President Karis: Europe must be confident in its policies

A meeting today between President Alar Karis and his Slovenian counterpart Nataša Pirc Musar focused on security and defence issues.

“A strong Europe means active and confident policies and innovation,” he remarked. “With those, we will be able to influence and inspire others, just as we have inspired them so far.”

The head of state noted that like the rest of Europe, the countries in the Western Balkan region recognise the need to increase their defence spending. “To ensure that Russia stays within its borders, even after the aggression in Ukraine ends, we as Europeans must be ready for a long-term standoff with the country,” he cautioned. “Russia must understand the mistake it has made, and avoid repeating it.”

President Musar visited Estonia in May, meeting with President Alar Karis and joining him on a panel at the Lennart Meri Conference alongside Finnish head of state Alexander Stubb. She will also be attending the Arraiolos Group meeting in Tallinn in October.

President Karis will be addressing an international conference on foreign policy and security in Slovenia tomorrow ahead of meeting with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels on Wednesday.
