The UN Central Emergency Response Fund has operated for 15 years and Estonia was the first to make a monetary contribution. The Head of State confirmed that Estonia will increase its contribution next year.
The meeting with the President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid involved a discussion of the COVID-19 crisis, matters of European security, climate policy and the activities of Estonia as an elected member of the UN Security Council. According to the Head of State, the experience of the Security Council has been very beneficial to Estonia. “Our diplomats have done a terrific job, we have increased our visibility and influence, cemented the relations with our allies and gained new partners,” said President Karis. “We have learned a lot in two years and we must use this new knowledge and experience also in the future by remaining active in the UN and communicating with countries further away, with whom we have managed to build close relationships.”
Today, the President of the Republic will speak at the high-level meeting of the UN Security Council about peace and security in the context of climate change, and meet with the Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres and the President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum.
