In a meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of Georgia in New York, President Alar Karis encouraged the country to continue along its path of reform towards European Union accession.

The Estonian head of state said that the coming months will be decisive in Georgia’s bid to gain candidate-country status and that the nation must press ahead in fulfilling the criteria set by the European Commission. “The EU’s door must be open to those who express a desire to join the union and do the groundwork necessary to gain membership,” he said.

President Karis and Prime Minister Garibashvili also spoke about recent developments in Georgia.

President Karis also met with Prime Minister Xavier Espot Zamora of Andorra, with whom he discussed the need to reform the UN Security Council, as well as cooperation in other international organisations and Andorra’s progress in negotiations with the European Union to enter into an association agreement.

Speaking at the Climate Ambition Summit held in parallel with the UN General Assembly, the Estonian head of state remarked that the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) serves as a sobering reminder of the task that lies ahead. He spoke about Estonia’s goals in the field of renewable energy, about the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and about the work being done to achieve climate neutrality.

President Karis also highlighted the fact that Estonia is actively cooperating with island nations and less developed countries to provide them with green technology solutions and know-how. “For example, we have supported the establishment of adaptation and emergency communications systems in the Pacific Ocean region, the creation of drinking water monitoring systems in Grenadian river basins and the development of solar energy solutions in Myanmar,” he noted.
