In his address at the business forum, the head of state described the characteristic features of the Estonian business community that have helped the country cope in the face of the crises caused by the pandemic, disruptions to supply chains and high energy prices, adding that the Estonian economy has demonstrated its competitiveness throughout.
“People in Estonia knew well before the onset of COVID-19 that traditional business operations could be transferred to a digital environment if needed,” he explained. “We have made use of new payment solutions and innovative forms of education technology and methods of transport. On top of that, we enjoy the benefits of a straightforward tax system and very little red tape.”
President Karis wished every success to the Estonian-Emirati Business Council, whose letter of intent was signed by its founding members at the business forum. “I am pleased to see that with only 10 days until Expo closes its doors, we have already thought about the future and about maintaining and strengthening economic relations between Estonia and the United Arab Emirates in the wake of Expo,” he said. “The council that has been established for our two countries on the initiative of the business community shows that the ideas and relationships that have taken form here will last well beyond the event itself.”
Later in the afternoon, President Karis met with the president and board members of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The meeting was also attended by Estonian entrepreneurs and members of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu. “If you are planning to do business with Europe, why not start with Estonia?” the head of state suggested in his address.
The Emirate of Sharjah is renowned for its cultural traditions and its world-class research and education. Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park has signed memoranda of cooperation with TalTech and the Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications, and Estonia is planning a partnership with the Sharjah International Book Fair.
