In meeting today with Speaker of the Parliament of Finland Jussi Halla-aho, President Alar Karis discussed security and defence cooperation in the Baltic Sea region, support for Ukraine and bilateral relations.

The head of state remarked that Finland’s membership of NATO now made even closer defence cooperation between neighbouring countries possible. “We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Finland over the years in the area of defence, including having trained together on a number of joint exercises,” he said. “Now that Finland is a fully fledged member of the alliance, that cooperation can only deepen. This will reinforce security throughout the Baltic Sea region.”

Speaking of energy security, President Karis said that connections between Estonia and Finland should be both expanded and diversified. “Diversity in energy connections forms part of our security,” he noted, “which is why the decision made as one by the Baltic States to decouple from the Russian power grid is so important.”

The head of state added that the third report on future cooperation between Estonia and Finland would serve as a solid basis for the further enhancement of bilateral relations between the two countries, providing guidance on the implementation of activities in the digital, green, economic and cultural spheres.

President Karis also stressed the importance of joint efforts in support of Ukraine so as to bring the war to an end on the conditions set by the beleaguered nation and to accelerate reconstruction in the country. He likewise spoke of supporting the Ukrainians on their journey towards NATO and EU accession, of ensuring that Russia is brought to justice and of using frozen assets for the benefit of Ukraine.
