President Alar Karis emphasised the need to put pressure on Russia to end the war through sanctions and military assistance to Ukraine during a discussion concerning Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference yesterday. “The only time when it’s possible to seriously negotiate peace with Russia is when it’s weak,” said President Karis.

According to President Karis, Russia needs to be put under constant pressure, both through sanctions and military assistance to Ukraine. “Sanctions weaken Russia’s economy and its ability to wage a long-term war,” he said. “We must also continue to provide Ukraine with substantial military and economic assistance to help them counter aggression.”

The Head of State pointed out that negotiations with Russia are always risky. “History gives us a clear lesson: the Tartu Peace Treaty of 1920 guaranteed independence for Estonia, but Russia was willing to violate it just a few years later when the opportunity arose.”

According to President Karis, Western support also has an impact on the morale and public opinion of the Ukrainian people: “The morale and fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people depend directly on whether they feel the support of the world.”

In addition to President Karis, the Yalta European Strategy (YES) discussion on Ukraine was attended by Victor Pinchuk (founder of YES and the Pinchuk Foundation), US Special Envoy General Keith Kellogg, Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna, Foreign Minister of Sweden Maria Malmer Stenergard, Prime Minister of Iceland Kristrún Frostadóttir and other guests.

Yesterday, the President of the Republic met with the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, to discuss regional and wider European security. He also met with the 5th President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, with whom he discussed the political situation and civil society issues in Georgia, and shared Estonia’s experience in e-elections.

Yesterday evening, President Karis attended a meeting of Nordic and Baltic leaders in Munich to discuss support for Ukraine. They jointly reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine and emphasised the need to ensure that the country is as strong as possible. The Nordic and Baltic countries also confirmed that they will continue to act to strengthen the security and resilience of Ukraine.
