The head of state remarked upon the contribution that the Order of Malta has made to charity and humanitarian work over the last nine centuries, and acknowledged its steadfast support for Ukraine and the social activities it oversees in Estonia.
“The work that the Order of Malta does reminds us that compassion knows no bounds,” he said. “It not only transcends national borders, but also cultural differences and generations. In a world so often marked by division and uncertainty, the Order’s work is a powerful example of how faith, service and respect for human dignity can bring people together.”
Discussing European security and Ukraine, President Karis underscored the importance of international unity and cooperation. “Alongside our allies and partners in Europe and around the world, we stand with Ukraine – a European country defending its sovereignty and freedom against Russia’s brutal aggression,” he said. “It must be stated very clearly: Ukraine is defending all of Europe. May justice, courage and humanity always prevail over those who seek to undermine such values.”
Other matters touched upon in the meeting were that of Ukrainian children deported by Russia and ways of enhancing cooperation between Estonia and the Order of Malta in supporting Ukraine.
The head of state added that he was very satisfied with the way that relations between Estonia and the Order of Malta have developed, noting that the opening of the Order’s embassy in Tallinn in 2023 has bolstered cooperation.
The situation in the Middle East and the activities of the Order of Malta in the region were also discussed during the meeting.
