President Alar Karis stressed the importance of South Korea as a partner in Asia with similar values at his meeting in Kadriorg with Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea Woo Won-shik, adding that we would like to further our cooperation in the fields of economy, defence and education.

They discussed the diversifying cooperation between the two countries. “Now that we have embassies in both countries, we can hope for more communication and collaborative projects than before – starting with economic cooperation and investments and ending with defence, culture, tourism and education,” said President Karis.

The President considers the high value of education in both societies to be a strong basis for furthering cooperation between Estonia and South Korea, especially regarding cooperation between universities. He gave the Speaker an overview of the AI education programme initiative in Estonia this spring, the goal of which is to give students and teachers the skills they need to thrive in a constantly developing technology-centric world. “AI has permanently changed things, and the education system has to go along with those changes,” said the President. He says AI can’t be ignored – we have to make the most of the opportunities it offers.

On the topic of international security, they discussed developments on the Korean Peninsula, Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and its effects on security in the region.

“The attacks of the last few days demonstrate that the Kremlin is not interested in a truce or lasting peace,” added President Karis. “This shows us how important it is to continue to provide strong support to Ukraine.” They also discussed the risks that come with shadow fleet activity.
