President Alar Karis will be meeting today in Vilnius with President Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania and President Egils Levits of Latvia to discuss cooperation between the Baltic States, the green transition and the hybrid attack being waged on the border of the European Union by Belarus. The Baltic heads of state will then be meeting virtually with their Polish counterpart, President Andrzej Duda, to talk about the situation on the Belarusian-EU border.

“The presidents of the Baltic States meet regularly to discuss cooperation between their three countries,” explained Celia Kuningas-Saagpakk, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to President Karis. “The focus of their meeting this year should have been the green transition and achieving climate goals, but recent developments mean that it has shifted to regional security and the hybrid attack being waged on the border of the European Union by Belarus. The president of Poland has also been invited to take part in the meeting for that very reason. The Lukashenko regime must realise that such cynical use of migrants to put pressure on the European Union will come to nothing.”

Whilst in Vilnius, the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian presidents will be signing a declaration on the achievement of climate neutrality in the Baltic States and giving a joint press conference.

President Karis and President Levits will also be visiting Vilnius University, where they will be given a guided tour of an exhibition dedicated to Lithuanian-Polish military commander Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius, shown historical documents pertaining to the Baltic States and introduced to representatives of the university’s rectorate and Institute of Baltic Languages and Culture.

President Karis will additionally be meeting with the university’s resident lecturer in the Estonian language and their students.

The head of state will be returning to Estonia this evening.
