President Karis said the month-long negotiations to form the coalition reflected the three parties’ determination to govern together. “I have had that confirmed for me by everyone I have spoken to,” he added. “These three parties have a strong majority in the parliament: 60 of the 101 seats. As such, I do not need to take the permitted two weeks to make my decision. I am of the view that the new government should start work as soon as possible, because there is much to be done.”
President Karis immediately designated Kaja Kallas as prime minister nominate and asked her to address parliament regarding the basis of the formation of the incoming government. “I hope the Riigikogu grants her the authority to form that government,” he said.
President Karis will meet tomorrow with the ministerial candidates from the three parties who will be taking up posts in ministries which are new to them. “After those meetings I hope to be able to appoint the new government with a good degree of confidence,” he said.
