A meeting between President Alar Karis and his Polish counterpart
Karol Nawrocki in Kadriorg today focused on defence and security issues in Europe and the Middle East.

The head of state said that shared lessons and experiences, including the recent breaches of EU airspace, have brought Estonia and Poland even closer together and deepened cooperation between the two nations. “Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is a signal to strengthen our defences, which both of our countries have consistently done and will keep doing,” he remarked. “We are investing significantly more in our defence capabilities from our national budgets than we did in the past, setting an example for others to follow.”

President Karis added that securing lasting peace in the Middle East is more important than ever on the global political agenda. “To achieve it, we must speak and listen to both sides,” he said. “The agreement that has been reached between them on the implementation of the first stage of the Gaza peace plan is an important step. We hope that the hostages are immediately released, that military action comes to an end and that a quick solution is found to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.”

On the invitation of his Estonian counterpart, President Nawrocki is taking part in the Arraiolos Group meeting being held in Tallinn today and tomorrow alongside 10 other EU heads of state. The event will focus on the growing role of AI in society and the international security situation.
