“Canada was one of the few countries to offer Ukraine weapons and ammunition even before Russia launched its war of aggression, showing that we have to be one step ahead if we want to win this war,” President Karis remarked. “There is simply no time for drawn-out debates on what to give the Ukrainians, or indeed whether to give them anything. In being so ahead of the curve, Canada has set an example to others.”
The meeting between the Estonian head of state and the Canadian Governor General also touched on cooperation in the field of defence technology innovation. Estonia and the United Kingdom are working together to establish headquarters for NATO’s European innovation incubator, while the North American headquarters will be based in Canada.
President Karis also outlined to the Governor General Estonia’s experience in researching the indigenous peoples of Siberia. Mary Simon is herself of Inuit descent and is the first indigenous Canadian to hold the office of Governor General, whose role is to represent the monarch, King Charles III, in Canada.
President Karis will also be opening a seminar in Reykjavik today showcasing Estonian science and the country’s experience and opportunities in Arctic research. This is the first time that part of the influential Arctic Circle assembly has been dedicated to Estonia.
