Russia remains the most immediate long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security. “Russia’s aggression will not end unless it’s met with strong and united resistance. That’s why we’re firmly committed to NATO’s stronger defence position and the presence of allied forces in our region.”
“NATO is strong when both the United States and Europe are strong,” said President Karis, confirming that Estonia will continue to contribute more than three per cent of GDP to national defence and calling on allies to make the same effort.
The presidents of the Baltic states discussed the completion of Rail Baltic. According to President Karis, the project is of strategic importance to both Estonia and Europe. “This isn’t just an infrastructure project, but an investment in our security, connectivity and economy. Therefore, it’s necessary that the construction work continues at a fast pace and the project is completed on time,” added the President of the Republic.
Speaking about the Baltic defence zone initiative, President Karis said that it will increase defence readiness. “The regional security projects of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania indicate readiness to defend every centimetre of our territory,” he added.
Speaking about energy infrastructure, the President of the Republic emphasised that the synchronisation of the electricity grids of the Baltic states with the Continental European network is directly linked to security, which strengthens energy independence.
Speaking about the latest developments in Georgia, President Karis reaffirmed Estonia’s strong support for Georgia’s path to Europe. “The Georgian people have clearly expressed their desire to become a member of the European Union. Their voices must be heard and their right to peaceful protest must be respected. Violence against demonstrators is unacceptable.”
President Karis also emphasised the need to continue providing strong support to Ukraine, which is essential for European security. “Estonia supports Ukraine's NATO membership and calls for rapid and effective accession negotiations with the European Union,” said the Estonian Head of State.
