President Alar Karis travels to Bucharest to attend the summit of the NATO eastern flank (B9) leaders, which will focus on the security situation in Europe, strengthening the defence of the Alliance’s eastern flank and preparations for the NATO summit in Ankara.

The leaders of the NATO eastern flank countries and Nordic leaders, the NATO Secretary General and the United States, discuss the security situation in Europe and the strengthening of the Alliance’s defence and deterrence posture. The discussions will also focus on the long-term security threat posed by Russia and the next steps to strengthen the defence and deterrence of the eastern flank of NATO. A separate meeting with the President of Ukraine will focus on continued support for Ukraine and pushing back against Russian aggression.

The summit in Bucharest comes ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, where the Allies will decide on the next steps to be taken by the Alliance to strengthen security in Europe and the Euro-Atlantic region.

The B9 (Bucharest 9) format of countries on NATO’s eastern flank incorporates Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. In addition to the B9 countries, the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – will attend the summit, as well as the President of Ukraine, the NATO Secretary General and the representative of the United States.

The goal of the meetings of the heads of state is to harmonise national positions on issues of importance for the security and defence of the Alliance’s eastern flank ahead of NATO summits.

The President of the Republic will be returning to Estonia late during night of Wednesday to Thursday.
