According to the President of the Republic, social problems cannot be solved from Brussels; Member States play the key role in solving such issues. “We also need to consider that our taxation system may need an overhaul as the nature of employment and work changes so we could ensure social services to our citizens, regardless of their location,” added the Estonian Head of State.
“Several initiatives that allow for co-operation are on the table during Estonia’s presidency; for example, we aim to achieve the approval of a proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, which will include basic social rights. Hopefully, in October, we can launch negotiations to conclude agreements regarding the Posting of Workers Directive,” stated President Kaljulaid.
The main issue to be discussed at the working meeting of the heads of state tomorrow will be the security of countries in the European Mediterranean region. President Kaljulaid will also have three bilateral meetings in Malta: with the Head of State of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the Head of State of Austria, Alexander van der Bellen, and the Head of State of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
