"The cross-border cooperation between these two towns in giving the children basic and hobby education in several languages is impressive. We talk a lot about the importance of giving Russian-speaking children the opportunity to learn the Estonian language, but we should also think about how useful it is for Estonian-speaking children to learn other languages," said the President of Estonia.
According to President Kaljulaid, we should support and encourage parents to enter their children into language immersion classes. "Of course there will be concerns, but the children of Pääsuke Nursery in Valga are a perfect example of how children can cope really well," she added.
Pääsuke Nursery School has used language immersion methodology for more than ten years, and last year they also received a language quality immersion award from Foundation Innove.
In a debate that took place in Valka Art School, where the focus was on cross-border cooperation, it was jointly admitted that there are some spheres where the two countries could even cooperate more, such as by offering their people better transport and health care options.
The President of the Republic will also meet today with the leaders of the local governments of Valgamaa.
The Head of State started her tour of Valgamaa yesterday at Taagepera, where she met with the members of village society. Yesterday, President Kaljulaid also visited Ritsu, a company that manufactures log houses, Tõrva Open Youth Centre, a company involved in growing grain crops and the multiplication and sale of certified seed, Puide Farm, and Tehvandi Sports Centre.
