In 2019 we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Japan; Japan recognised the Republic of Estonia on 6 March 1919. "For this purpose the timing of this visit is symbolic, as this year we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the Republic of Estonia," explained the Head of State.
Prime Minister Abe was accompanied in Tallinn by a representative business and media delegation. "Estonia and Japan enjoy very good relations at political level, and I do hope that this visit will contribute to more intense co-operation between our enterprises and the establishment of closer trade relations," said President Kaljulaid after the meeting. During Estonia's Presidency of the European Council, an essential arrangement was reached regarding an agreement on economic partnership between Japan and the European Union; once enforced, this will facilitate mutual trade.
The meeting focused on the digital development of the countries and cyber security. Security in general and issues concerning North Korea were also discussed.
Shinzo Abe is the first Prime Minister of Japan to visit Estonia. However, ten years ago the Emperor of Japan, Akihito and Empress Michiko paid a visit to Estonia.
