In recent years the co-operation between our two countries has focused above all on digital solutions. “The representatives of Senegal visited Estonia to learn more about our e-governance and have plans to develop your e-governance and e-solutions,” said President Kaljulaid after meeting her colleague. Possibilities for co-operation in the sphere of cyber security were also discussed.
At the meeting President Kaljulaid emphasised the role of Senegal as a partner to the European Union. “For many years, Senegal has been our reliable and good partner and as a president of one of the European Union Member States, I appreciate this highly,” stated the Head of State and added that digital issues and solutions must become a component of co-operation programmes between the European Union and Senegal.
The situation in West Africa in general and the security of the region were also discussed at the meeting. Senegal makes an active contribution to ensuring the safety of the region and takes part, just like Estonia, in a MINUSMA mission in their neighbouring country Mali. “We can only tackle the most complicated challenges – security, climate and environmental issues or migration – if everyone contributes,” said President Kaljulaid.
The Head of State also thanked Senegal for their support for Estonia’s candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020-21.
President Kaljulaid’s work visit to Senegal will end tomorrow and the Head of State will return to Estonia on Sunday. The Head of State was accompanied in Senegal by a business delegation of Estonian entrepreneurs interested in establishing contacts with partners in Senegal.
