“Five years ago, the whole world watched in shock and disbelief as Notre-Dame Cathedral, a landmark of Western culture, burned. Many were horrified and stunned as one of the pinnacles of humanity’s spirituality and craftsmanship, a masterpiece created by many, many people and generations, was destroyed before our eyes. We were together in this pain,” President Karis said after visiting Notre-Dame Cathedral. “Now, five years later, we’re all delighted that this great work has been restored again thanks to the joint efforts of many craftsmen.”
“Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is not only a historic landmark, but also a symbol of hope, resilience and the ability to overcome challenges,” said President Karis. “The restoration of the cathedral after the fire confirms France’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and the continuity of its history. This is an important step in respecting our – Europe’s – past, cultural space and values.”
Yesterday, President Alar Karis and Sirje Karis attended the re-opening of the restored Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the reception held at Élysée Palace to mark the occasion. Today, the Head of State attended a mass at Notre-Dame Cathedral.
President Karis exchanged views with his counterparts, including President Emmanuel Macron, US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, before the cathedral’s reopening ceremony and during the reception that followed.
The Head of State and Sirje Karis will return to Estonia late Sunday evening.
