President Alar Karis: Education is a key issue in the age of artificial intelligence

President of the Republic Alar Karis stressed at the opening of the Latitude59 Startup & Tech Event that the rapid development of the tech sector is fundamentally changing the labour market and the economy, making people’s ability to learn and adapt increasingly important in society. “We will still need well-educated people in the future. But the knowledge and skills that provide an edge in the labour market are always changing over time. Education is therefore one of the key issues of our time.”

According to the head of state, artificial intelligence is no longer just a technological service, but a general-purpose technology that, like electricity or the bicycle, affects almost all sectors of the economy. According to him, AI gives small businesses access to capabilities that were previously only available to large organisations.

President Karis pointed out that technological change has always reshaped jobs and the skills needed throughout history. According to him, society will still need well-educated people in the future, but the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the labour market are constantly changing. “The ability to learn – the ability to constantly develop existing skills and acquire completely new ones – is a lasting advantage. After all, the ability to learn is the ability to adapt,” said President Karis.

He emphasised that a strong education will continue to be based on the development of reading, analytical thinking, maths, collaboration and self-expression skills. “We must remain human – to be able to express ourselves, to work together and to understand other people. Good education will stand the test of time,” he said. “Narrow technical skills based on the use of a specific machine or the push of a specific button become more vulnerable.”

According to the head of state, artificial intelligence must be used not only to speed up work, but also for the development of people themselves. “The people who will benefit the most from artificial intelligence are those who know how to use it the most intelligently,” said the President.

The President also introduced the AI Leap programme, which is being launched in Estonia in cooperation with OpenAI and Google, and which aims to create a learning platform for students and teachers to improve the quality of learning and develop the skills they will need in the future.

Latitude59 is the leading technology and startup event in the Baltics and Northern Europe, bringing startup entrepreneurs, investors and technology sector leaders from around the world to Tallinn.
