President Alar Karis: Balkan accession to the EU must be stepped up

During his meeting with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, President Alar Karis noted that Albania, like other Balkan countries, has done a lot to join the European Union and now is the right moment to increase the pace of negotiations.

“Albania is a committed member of NATO and a long-standing supporter of Ukraine, and a country that takes over and implements the sanctions,” President Karis said. “Estonia supports Albania’s accession to the European Union, and the current security situation not only favours, but also requires that accession negotiations be stepped up.”

“There is room for cooperation in the bilateral relations between Estonia and Albania in the fields of economy, technology and culture,” said the head of state. “There is certainly also a good potential for the promotion of tourism – despite its small area, Albania is one of the largest and most popular holiday destinations in the Balkans, and thanks to the direct flight from Tallinn to Tirana, the number of our tourists has already multiplied.”

Today, the Estonian Head of State hosted the President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović in Kadriorg in the morning, in addition to the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama. Tomorrow, the Estonian Head of State will meet with the President of Moldova Maia Sandu.

On Friday, President Karis will attend the opening of the Lennart Meri Conference and, as the patron of the conference, will host a dinner in honour of the guests at the National Library.

On Saturday, President Alar Karis will open a discussion on the resilience of small states at the Lennart Meri Conference (“Building Forward: Small but Resilient”). The discussion will be attended by the President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović, the President of Moldova Maia Sandu, the Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan Ayman Safadi, and the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Relations Hiski Haukkala. The debate will be moderated by Sylvie Kauffmann, journalist at Le Monde.
