The King and Queen of Denmark to Pay a State Visit to Estonia

09.01.2026 | 17:02

At the invitation of President Alar Karis, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Denmark will pay a state visit to Estonia from 27 to 28 January.

The state visit will focus on regional security and defence cooperation between Estonia and Denmark, building on the two countries’ strong historical ties. Key topics will include strengthening cyber defence, as well as the situation in Ukraine and ensuring comprehensive support for Ukraine. As Estonia holds the presidency of Nordic-Baltic cooperation this year—having just taken over the role from Denmark—the visit will also address further deepening cooperation in defence, digitalisation and the economy within the region, as well as opportunities for enhanced cultural cooperation.

The state visit of the Their Majesties reaffirms the close and long-standing friendship between Estonia and Denmark. In addition to geographical proximity, this relationship is founded on shared values, close regional cooperation, and collaboration within NATO, the European Union and the United Nations.

Denmark never recognised the annexation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union and was among the first countries to restore diplomatic relations in August 1991. Denmark’s support was also of invaluable importance to Estonia’s accession to NATO and the European Union. At the time, Denmark was also one of the main and most active supporters and driving forces behind the Baltic defence-related projects (BALTPAT, BALTRON, BALTNET, BALDEFCOL).

Their Majesties the King and Queen will be accompanied on the visit by Denmark’s Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen. King Frederik X last visited Estonia in 2018 as Crown Prince, Queen Margrethe II visited Estonia in 2019, the visit marked the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia and the 800th anniversary of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog.
