In accepting the letter of credentials of the Irish ambassador, President Karis said that Estonia and Ireland enjoyed excellent relations and that Estonia was dedicated to developing them further. He thanked Ireland for its solidarity and its contribution to European security, as well as for its support of Ukraine. “For our part, we must do all we can to ensure than Ukraine wins the war, but we must also join forces today to accelerate the rebuilding of the beleaguered country,” he said. The head of state also recognised the outstanding cooperation between Estonia and Ireland as fellow members of international organisations.
In meeting with the Icelandic ambassador, President Karis highlighted the important role that Iceland played when Estonia’s independence was restored and highlighted the excellent bilateral relations between the countries. He stressed that although their nations enjoyed a very good relationship, there remained untapped potential in the digital, economic and cultural fields with which to further improve it. “Iceland and Estonia are very like-minded countries, with Iceland having joined the European Union in placing sanctions on Russia and supporting Ukraine in every way it can,” he remarked. “Iceland also acted demonstratively as a member of the Arctic Council in agreeing with other members to suspend relations with Russia due to its aggression in Ukraine.” The head of state said that Estonia also places great value on its cooperation with Iceland as part of NATO and within regional cooperation formats.
The Irish ambassador is resident in Tallinn and the Icelandic ambassador is resident in Helsinki.
