Helle Meri was born on 14 March, 1949 in Rapla, graduated from the 5th flight of the Department of Theatre, worked at the Estonian Drama Theatre and gave up acting in April 1992, when her husband Lennart Meri accepted the duties of the Estonian Ambassador in Helsinki.
From 6 October, 1992, when Lennart Meri took office as President of the Republic of Estonia, Helle Meri performed the duties of the spouse of the head of state. "The curtain opened and the show started. Life provided mise-en-scenes," she has recalled. Over the course of nine years, Helle Meri shaped the role of the president's spouse in present-day Estonia, dedicating herself to the activities of the SOS Children's Village Estonian Association, Tallinn Children's Hospital Support Fund, Arno Tali Foundation, the competition for large families and the youth organisation Kodutütred (Home Daughters), and contributing to the creation of the traditions and protocol practices of the institution of the head of state.
Presidents Alar Karis and Mrs Sirje Karis extend their deepest condolences to the loved ones and friends of Helle Meri.
"The passing of Helle Meri breaks my heart, it is so unexpected and painful. We met many times. Helle always advised me on how to remain calm and confident in any situation as the president's spouse, while being friendly and caring. During this sad time, I am in my heart with Helle Meri's daughter, her loved ones and friends," said Mrs Sirje Karis.
