In Kadriorg today, President Alar Karis was presented with the letters of credentials of Finnish ambassador Vesa Vasara and Danish ambassador Niels Boel Abrahamsen.

When receiving the letter of credentials of the Finnish ambassador, President Karis emphasised the uniqueness of the Estonian-Finnish relationship. “Our relationship is special and good in all fields, but the goal is to improve cross-border digital cooperation even further in order to simplify proceedings for citizens of both countries. We also wish to strengthen regional energy security and corresponding security cooperation,” said the head of state.

At the meeting with the Danish ambassador, President Karis noted their good bilateral relations. “Denmark is a consensus partner to Estonia on many issues,” said the President of the Republic. “We cooperate in the context of Nordic Countries and Baltic States, NATO and the European Union, as well as in the sphere of regional security. The defence cooperation between Estonia and Denmark is intense and we have common interests concerning cybersecurity and information technology, overall development and climate and energy, including construction of Baltic Sea wind farms.”

During the meetings with the Finnish and Danish ambassadors, the head of state of Estonia expressed his conviction that Finnish and Swedish NATO membership will elevate the regional defence cooperation to a new level and that the Nordic-Baltic cooperation format (NB8) should be used more actively to coordinate security and defence policy issues. The participants also discussed the need to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine and to isolate Russia, to impose stricter sanctions and to restrict issuing of Schengen visas to Russian tourists.

The ambassadors of Finland and Denmark reside in Tallinn.
