President Karis highlighted Secretary General Stoltenberg’s contribution in leading NATO in a complicated security situation and stressed that his presence at the Estonian Independence Day celebrations shows that we are well protected. “For us, the European Union and NATO stand for freedom,” the head of state admitted.
President Karis and Secretary General Stoltenberg discussed the situation in Ukraine and possibilities for increasing and coordinating the allied military assistance to Ukraine. “Ukraine is currently at the front line of freedom. It is good to see that the whole world has joined hands in backing Ukraine,” said the Estonian head of state.
“Putin hopes that the West will tire. We will not. We will continue to fully assist Ukraine and are prepared for a long-term effort,” said President Karis. “NATO’s allies have continually increased their support to Ukraine and we continue to look for new opportunities as we speak.”
The discussion also touched upon Finland’s and Sweden’s hopefully imminent accession to NATO, which will further strengthen the alliance.
