President Alar Karis of Estonia and President Sauli Niinistö of Finland visited Tapa military base today, where they were given an overview of the Estonian Defence Forces and of cooperation with NATO allies.

While at the military base the heads of state met with conscripts and allied soldiers. They were introduced to both Estonian and allied units and shown the battle equipment used by France, Denmark and the United Kingdom, the latter of which is the framework nation for the NATO Battlegroup based in Estonia.

“Our allies being here in Estonia has inspired our defence forces and working with them has been an invaluable experience,” said President Karis. “Now we need to consider our options and act to ensure conditions enabling the permanent presence of allies in our country.” He noted that Estonia and Finland’s reserve forces were very similar and that they would enjoy closer cooperation within NATO.

Commander Martin Herem described to the Estonian and Finnish heads of state the current units of the Estonian Defence Forces, which have been developed on the principle of a reserve army, outlined their capabilities and explained the role of the Defence League. He also touched on areas of cooperation to which Estonian and Finnish soldiers have contributed in recent years.
