The head of state spoke with the ambassadors about European security and cooperation in international organisations. Discussing Russia’s war in Ukraine, President Karis stressed that its impact is being felt not just in Europe, but around the world. “Russia’s aggression is in breach of the UN Charter and its desire to redraw the borders of a sovereign nation by force is completely unacceptable,” he remarked.
The head of state confirmed that Estonia would continue to support Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor and that it was already assisting the country in its rebuilding. “I hope everyone else who does not subscribe to Russia’s enforced policy of 21st-century colonialism and who wishes to live in a world that is based on international law and collectively agreed rules does likewise,” he added.
President Karis also discussed with the ambassadors bilateral relations between Estonia and their countries. He expressed his delight at Canada’s decision to appoint an ambassador to reside in Estonia for the first time and that the Slovakian and Bolivian ambassadors had been appointed to represent their countries in Estonia for a second time.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Slovakia.
The Chinese and Canadian ambassadors are based in Tallinn, while the Bolivian ambassador resides in Stockholm and the Slovakian ambassador resides in Helsinki.
