At a meeting in New York held as part of the opening week of the UN General Assembly, the presidents of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland considered it necessary to increase sanctions when discussing the response to Russia’s military aggression. “The pressure on Russia to end the war must continue and to this end, we are working towards proposing new restrictive measures to be imposed on Russia,” said President Alar Karis.

The presidents of the four countries were of the opinion that the UN General Assembly must give a clear message to countries of the Global South that Russia is a danger to everyone’s peace and security and violates the UN Charter. “If we let the aggression of a permanent member of the UN Security Council happen in Ukraine, none of our countries are safe,” noted President Karis.

The heads of state of the Baltic States and Poland admitted that the member states and representatives of the European Union must become more active in distributing and explaining our positions. “We cannot take the support of the Global South for granted, but work for it,” said President Karis.

The four heads of state also discussed energy security and the measures planned for the coming heating period to help people cope with larger energy costs.
