Ambassadors Timur Rakhmanov of Uzbekistan, Kapila Thushara Fonseka of Sri Lanka and Paul Jared Ballantyne of New Zealand presented their letters of credentials to President Alar Karis in Kadriorg today.

The head of state spoke to the ambassadors about fostering bilateral relations and resolving conflicts, stressing that it was in their common interest not to support the Russian war machine and to comply with international sanctions, and calling for stronger positions on Russia’s aggression in both the UN and the OSCE, since it is very important to Estonia to assist Ukraine.

President Karis underscored the connection between Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security before touching on developments in the UN and explaining why it is vital to press ahead with reforms to the UN Security Council.

In his meeting with Ambassador Rakhmanov, the head of state spoke about bilateral relations and the situation in Central Asia, acknowledging Uzbekistan’s growing role as a leader in the region and in resolving the conflict between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Speaking to Ambassador Fonseka, President Karis talked of cooperation on digital issues and cybersecurity and encouraged contact to boost trade between Estonia and Sri Lanka, which to date has been very modest.

The head of state assured Ambassador Ballantyne that Estonia considers cooperation with like-minded countries very important and that it sees potential for closer bilateral relations with New Zealand in the digital, education and cybersecurity fields. He thanked the country for its support in engaging with the Cook Islands on the issue of the shadow fleet and for its contribution to guaranteeing the security of critical underwater infrastructure, including the Estlink2 cable.

The Uzbek ambassador resides in Riga, the New Zealand ambassador in Warsaw and the Sri Lankan ambassador in Stockholm.
